Question by Stephen T: If they can make diet sodas, why can’t they make diet candy bars? diet butterfinger, diet m &ms, etc?
serious questions i have been asking since I worked at a convenience store a few years ago. none of the vendors knew (or cared). if i could patent the IDEA, I would be rich, but unfortunately you have to patent products, not ideas.

It is because most of the calories in a candy bar come from fat, not sugar. They already have sugar free candy bars, but they still have lots of calories. They haven’t found a good substitute for fat yet — those Olestra diet potato chips haven’t really caught on and cause you to spend a lot of time, uhhh, indisposed. With diet soda, once you substitute out the sugar for an artificial sweetener that doesn’t have any calories, you’ve got a diet soda. Not so with a candy bar.
