  • Letting go of bondage to food begins by reading this 30-Day devotional. Each day you’ll treat yourself with a verse from scripture and inspiring words from author Sherri Rose Shepherd. Reward yourself as a Princess of the King when you see how God treasures you as his daughter. As the author writes on page 146 “Anyone can choose to be a worldly princess, but you, my Sister Princess, have been handpicked by the King to be His Princess.” This theme flows through each page as the author lifts you from worldly habits to spiritual habits.

The Princess Diet Plan in the back of the book includes foods to avoid, recommended foods and recipes. The fasting foods are the common allergy foods: corn, white flour and rice, sugars and sweeteners. Recommended foods include birch sugar, liquid amino acids, and gluten free mixes. Most dieters will find this food plan challenging to follow.

I recommend the book as a devotional and not as a diet plan. Reading the daily devotions fills you up with the Word of scripture and offers emotional support as you change your eating habits.

  • “Fit for My King” is a diet plan and devotional that is Biblically based and follows a diet plan that is strict but effective. Sheri Rose Shepherd starts the book with a transparent accounting of the history of her life. She then shares where the Lord has taken her and what she has learned to be the best way to care for her “temple”. She instructs her readers to than start a thirty-day fast from all white sugar products, including all sugar substitutes. To most Americans this is a shocking idea, but Mrs. Shepherd follows this with daily devotions and notes of encouragement that aid the reader in drawing on the Lord’s strength. Mrs. Shepherd shares in the back of the book a few recipes to aid the reader in fasting throughout the thirty days. I appreciated the biblically based devotions and Mrs. Shepherd’s no nonsense approach, the devotionals are great and the journalling prompts helpful.

  • I was excited about Fit for My King because I have been struggling with weight loss for years. I know all the principles of healthy eating, but usually can’t motivate myself to follow them. I hoped a Christian perspective would make the difference.

The book offers a diet plan the author has developed from her own experiences with eating disorders. But first, Shepherd talks about Queen Esther’s beauty regimen developed to please the king. She tells her readers we are princesses and challenges us to live to please our King. She uses several different scriptures to remind us that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit and treating it well will give us health and energy.

Before presenting the eating plan, she also offers a covenant letter for the reader to sign. The rest of the book is a series of 30 daily devotionals with a scripture, a prayer and an action to take. It ends with menu plans and recipes for “His princess” to follow.

The concept that intrigued me was tying fasting to healthy eating. Shepherd challenges her readers to fast from sugar, as well as other unhealthy foods, for 30 days. For me, this turned a fairly familiar diet plan into an act of worship. Unfortunately, the rest of the book didn’t help me to follow the plan the way I was hoping. I found the devotionals to be pep talks, rather than meditations on the scriptures presented. Many of them were about issues of self-esteem that I do not face.

You’ll appreciate the book if you are looking for Christian encouragement and emotional support. It may also challenge you to change your attitudes toward food.

Pros: Christian perspective on healthy eating with daily devotionals and new recipes. Also has some insight into causes of eating disorders.

Cons: Scriptures are quoted, but not explained.

  • The subtitle of Fit for My King is His Princess 30-Day Diet Plan and Devotional. That is not entirely accurate because this book is so much more than a diet plan. This book is a plan for living a healthy life, not just physically, but mentally as well. I absolutely love this book and I admire Sheri Rose Shepherd for openly and honestly sharing her struggles and triumphs to help her readers live a healthy life.

Each daily devotional deals with a real-life topic that we can all apply to our lives right now. There is also a prayer and a Bible verse. I really like the “His Princess in Action” at the end of each devotional. It always gave me a lot to think about and a way to put in practice what I just read.

Fit for My King is a book that can help a lot of women who are dealing the self esteem issues, body image issues and other issues regarding not feeling good enough for God. This book has reassured me that I am good enough for God and that I am indeed His princess. What a comfort it is to know that. I know that Sheri Rose Shepherd has had a lot of difficulties and struggles and I thank her so much for sharing those struggles and helping other women. I highly recommend this book to help you with your health and fitness journey.

  • “Fit For My King” by Sheri Rose Shepherd is not your run-of-the-mill diet book. This is a 30-day diet plan and a devotional designed to change the way you think about food and how to see yourself as God does through saturation in His Word. This wonderful book is appropriately loaded with scripture to bathe your mind. It is packed with practical wisdom and wit. And the back of this book is filled with lots of yummy-sounding recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and beverages.

I’m usually a bit apprehensive about Christian dieting and health books because I’ve read books that promote products that you can only buy through the author’s website. Although the recipes do talk about using specific products, it seems that the reader will be able to find the ingredients or make intelligent substitutions for some items. I definitely look forward to making some of these dishes.
